Anytime anyone shoots someone else with a gun in Minneapolis, it violates the values we hold as a people. MPD and our partners are working hard to enforce the law and hold accountable shooters and those that aid them, both downtown and across the city.
Downtown, we have increased community policing and added beats on Hennepin Avenue both day and night, and are coordinating comprehensive resources from several public, private, and non-profit partners in order to make Hennepin safer and more livable during the day. With the City’s help, the Downtown Improvement District has added more Ambassadors, and improved communications between police, ambassadors, security officers, and outreach teams, because we know better communication means a safer Minneapolis. Partners like the Youth Coordinating Board and YouthLINK are interrupting disruptive behavior and connecting youth to the services they need.
Citywide, the investigation of all gun violence is centralized in MPD’s Violent Crime Investigations Team, and specially trained officers from the Weapons Unit work with the ATF and community to follow up on every report of shots fired.
Finally, we have begun a new collaborative strategy to reduce homicides and shootings called Group Violence Intervention that brings together law enforcement, social services, and the community to send a clear message that gun violence must stop, offer support to offenders who walk away from it, and hold accountable those who continue perpetrating violence. In mid-June, groundbreaking downstream safety strategies designed by community members themselves begin on West Broadway and in Little Earth with funding support from the City.
Gun violence in any and all parts of our city must end, and can end. These efforts to end it are all connected because we as a city and a people are connected to each other. What happens in one part of Minneapolis, good or bad, affects all of us in every part of Minneapolis: whether Downtown, Northside, or Southside, we rise together when we celebrate each other, when we pull for each other, and when we hold each other accountable.
